From 1923 to 1924, the SP and subsidiaries added 6,675 single sheathed box cars to the rosters. These cars were assigneed to the classes B-50-13 & -14. They featured a variety of roofs (Murphy XLA on the -13s and Murphy radial, Hutchins Dry Lading and Chicago-Cleveland Viking [early design] on the -14s.) Several of the cars in both classes received the Camel-Allen door, which had the door locking hardware on the right side of the door rather than the traditional left hand location. All were delivered with Bettendorf T-section trucks and composite ends. Many cars were upgraded with Dreadnaught ends. All cars also received an unusual ladder with the rungs placed between L shapes with the angle facing outward.
The model is based upon a Sunshine Models kit with Red Caboose trucks and Westerfield Carmer cut levers. The model was painted a 50/50 mix of Floquil box car and oxide reds. Decals are from the Microscale set 87-911, designed for these cars. Weathering was done with Bragdon powders. Chalk marks are from Sunshine.
