In the mid-1930s, the Delaware & Hudson refurbished their 50-ton USRA box cars and applied new roofs to most, if not all, of the cars. The roofs applied varied from the Viking on the model shown above to various forms of radial roofs and Murphy rectangular panel roofs with panels in the outer roof sections, an unusual feature. Here are some prototype photos, including the subject of this model.
The model is based upon a Westerfield kit with Accurail trucks. The Viking roof is a Des Plaines Hobbies injection molded part. The roof was shortened slightly and the underside of the part was "carved" significanly to allow it it fit inside the Westerfield car body. Lettering is from Westerfield and Champ. Weathering was done with Bragdon powders. Chalk marks are from Sunshine.
