Collection of Ted Culotta
Between 1925 and 1928, the SP purchased (for itself and subsidiaries) 3,900 B-50-15s and 1003 B-50-16s. The major distinction between the 15 and 16 was a 5’0” kingpin to striker plate distance on the 15s versus 5’6” on the 16s. These cars were delivered with an assortment of parts that make them interesting to track. Cars received early Viking, Hutchins Dry Lading and Murphy radial roofs, Camel, Allen and Youngstown doors and Murphy and Dreadnaught ends. In addition, some cars received end doors.
From the mid-1930s through the mid-1950s, many, but not all, of these cars were rebuilt by welding steel plate to the trusses. In addition, a small number of these cars gained fame when painted black and placed into Overnight service.
Sunshine Models offers accurate HO scale kits cast in resin to model all variations of these cars.
