Charles Wales Photo, William Hopkins Collection, early 1948, Washington, DC
Between 1941 and 1944, the New Haven purchased 3,000 box cars that were copies of the AAR's 1937 design. All cars were delivered with black doors, something frequently missed by modelers, manufacturers and historians. The door on the car pictured above is black, although it is not as apparent as in builders' photos. The cars were delivered as follows:
30000-30999, built 1941, Pressed Steel Car
31000-32999, built 1944, Pullman-Standard (Butler, PA)
For more information about the details associated with these cars, visit the AAR 1937 Box car prototype information page.
