Tenth Annual Prototype Modelers' Seminar
Oct 23-26, 2003

Well, another Naperville is in the books, and as always, it was a great time. I spent less time than usual at the clinics and more time perusing the wares of the many photo dealers. Bob's had plenty of good material, which was not a surprise. Mike Gruber (Mainline Photos) had many new photos from the estate of the late Tom Martorano, plus many more that are still to be printed. Bill Raia, John Fuller and Bruce Meyer had their usual good stashes as well.

Sunshine had its usual cache of New Releases and they did not disappoint. The theme was rebuilds with offerings for the L&N, C&O, NYC, Frisco and Nickel Plate. In addition, new single sheathed cars were released for the NP, Burlington and Frisco. Two new '32 ARA cars were introduced - Chicago Great Western and Nacionales de Mexico. The NC&St.L '32 ARA express conversions were also offered as Private Stock kits (Private Stock kits are only available at the show.) One other Private Stock kit offered was the Santa Fe's Fe-N/O double sheathed auto cars. More UTLX X-3 tank cars were also released. The mini kit gift for attendees was an EJ&E Modified 1937 AAR box car with 8' Superior doors. The Branchline Trains kit is the basis for the conversion.

Westerfield had the SP caboose that was released at the SP Historical & Technical Society Convention.

There were many, many beautiful models on display. Unfortunately, I took almost no photos this year (no time) with the exception of some of Jack Spencer's exquisitely detailed models (I believe that Jack is the best Steam Era freight car modeler out there today.)

I am continually struck by the number of genuinely nice people I meet at these events. There are so few people that seem to have poor attitudes, separate agendas, egos as big as the hotel, etc. It's always refreshing to be around a group of people that not only share my interest, but are enjoyable to be around. It really helps to recharge my batteries and get me excited about the next gathering.

To those who were unable to attend, I can only encourage you to do your best to make it next year. It's well worth the trip.
